FDNY's New Fire Boat, Three Four Three
April 30, 2010, New York City
Named for the FDNY members killed on Sept. 11, the Three Forty Three is the newest addition to the FDNY Marine Division.
The Three Forty Three will be assigned to Marine 1 on the Hudson River.
The new 140-foot, 500-ton, $27 million dollar boat will be the world’s largest fireboat with a maximum speed of 18 knots and the capability of pumping 50,000 gallons of water per minute.
The Three Forty Three has been designed to detect and protect firefighters from chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents, and contains a pressurized area that filters the air supply using special charcoal and high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters; allowing crew members to operate when needed in hostile environments. Decontamination and first aid can be handled aboard the ship as well by means of a de-con shower area that leads to a triage and first-aid station.
The FDNY Marine Fleet is responsible for over 450 miles of coastline and harbors and has protected New York City residents for 134 years. |

FDNY-NYPD Game Is All About Heart
by Russ Cohen
March 29, 2010, Uniondale
Over the weekend I attended the FDNY-NYPD hockey game for the first time in years. My first experience was very positive and this one was just as positive.
FDNY (Bravest) won this game 10-7 but they actually had a 4-0 lead and the NYPD (Finest) fought back to make it a game in the third period.

Guns ‘n Hoses combined aren't enough to stop New York win
by Charlie Sokaitis and Rebecca Palsha
Sunday, December 6, 2009
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Sullivan Arena was packed for the annual Guns ‘n Hoses hockey game Sunday night.
This is the 10th year of the charity hockey game. Instead of facing off against each other, though, the Anchorage fire and police departments teamed up to play the Fire Department of New York.
The game was closely contested, with Anchorage's Jim Tobin putting several shots into the visitors' net to tie the game at 8 in the third period. It was New York's Mike Agliato who sank the winning goal later that period, however, bringing the final score to 9-8.
All of the game's proceeds went to the Anchorage chapter of the American Diabetes Association and the Scotty Gomez Foundation.
"We use the funds from here to give camp scholarships for diabetes kids," said Mike Wachsmuth with the American Diabetes Association. "We have a camp down on the Kenai during the summertime. Diabetes is a very expensive disease."
Last year, Guns ‘n Hoses raised $40,000.
